Most everyday music fans and consumers of music follow the same purchasing rules for music as they do for any other product or service. It basically comes down to cost and what do I get for it, we want the best price we can get for the service or product. Allow me to make the argument that consuming music is a bit different than other things we purchase.
Let’s talk the price of owning the music as downloads versus streaming. Most people who use a streaming service have their favorites on a playlist. You listen to these playlists more often than anything else. So to me, it makes sense to purchase the music and place it on a player where I can access it anywhere at any time without being connected to the internet. If I buy 10 of my favorite songs for $1.00 or less that is only $10.00. One of the leading music streaming services charges about $12.00 per month or $144.00 per year. Now if I load up my device with 100 of my favs and scrap the service, I’d not only save $44.00 but I’d continue to save more each year. Now I can be more selective in the songs I choose to spend time with. I can then go to Amazon Music and download more new songs as I hear them on the radio or on Youtube.
Price aside, when you purchase music, you place more creative power into the bands and artists you love. If 10 of your friends and 10 of their friends purchase a download for $1.00 that is $1,000 dollars you’ve just placed into their ability to create new music. When you spend $10.00 per month, the stream for that song pays out $.0045 to the artist on average. You would have to stream that song 22,222.22 times before the same artist receives $100.00 and 222,222.22 streams to receive $1,000. At this rate, the music industry is not sustainable due to the use of streaming services.
This is why, it is important now more than ever to help educate the average music consumer regarding the critical and delicate state of our music industry and how they can be proactive to support it.
By purchasing a music player and downloading superior high-quality music in WAV and FLAC files or lesser quality MP3s you are once again directly supporting the artist.
By doing so, you will put more money in their pockets and save more money from leaving yours.
